What is Pupil Pathways?
Pupil Pathways is a cloud-based platform designed for use by schools and local authorities to manage, share and monitor pupil information, especially around transitions (e.g., from early years to primary, primary to secondary) and inclusion (for example, tracking vulnerable learners, pupils with SEND, or those at risk of exclusion). It aims to replace scattered spreadsheets and disparate data systems with a single source of truth for learners’ journey.
Key features include structured and secure data-sharing between settings (nurseries, primary schools, secondary, post-16) so that important pupil information—such as SEND status, safeguarding, attendance/behaviour patterns, previous interventions, learning support needs and pupil voice—can follow the child. The platform supports modules like StepIntoSchool (for early years to primary), SixIntoSeven (for primary to secondary), NextSteps (for post-16 transitions) and Foresight Tracks (for monitoring inclusion risks, attendance, exclusions). It also offers dashboards for real-time monitoring, integration with school MIS via tools like Wonde, audit trails, data export and compliance features to ensure data protection. Moreover, it allows schools to flag “flags” (risk indicators), capture pupil voice, and maintain a “Pupil Passport” view of each learner’s journey.
Implementation typically involves configuring the platform for the local authority or trust, connecting the MIS (via an integration such as Wonde) or uploading data, and setting up user roles (schools, receiving schools, inclusion teams) with secure access. For example, when a primary school knows that a pupil is moving to secondary, they set up the transfer in SixIntoSeven, share the structured profile ahead of time (including SEND, behaviour, attendance, support history) so the receiving school is ready from day one. Similarly, for pupils at risk of exclusion or with attendance worries, schools and the LA can open a “Foresight Track” case in the platform, coordinate interventions, monitor progress and liaise with multi-agency teams. Onboarding typically comes with training, data-governance setup, service documentation and implementation support from Pupil Pathways’ own team. Schools then use the system ongoing for live monitoring, reporting and transitions rather than relying on separate spreadsheets or informal hand-overs.
