What is SchoolOnline?
SchoolOnline provides top quality, digital exam revision in English and Maths through our innovative EdTech platform, which harnesses the benefits of digital distribution to scale access to some of the UK’s top examiners and tutors. In a market where 25% of children receive private tuition to achieve their optimal results at KS2 and GCSE, we set out to level the playing field by developing a solution for the remaining 75% of children that would allow them to access all the benefits that private tuition brings to exam outcomes.
A library of bite-sized tutorials created by the UK’s leading, most experienced examiners provides the backbone of our software. Every single video is produced and animated by an experienced film production team to optimise engagement with children at both GCSE and KS2 levels providing concise, highly targeted tuition.
In 2021, we relaunched our platform to include powerful new features for both schools and home users. This new functionality allows schools to set detailed, auto-marked revision assignments for their students with high levels of insight into student engagement and analytics on strengths and weaknesses while supporting students in their learning with our targeted video explanations to each question.
Our platform can be used independently by home users (directly purchasing an individual membership) and within a school environment through our enhanced product, SchoolOnline Classroom. Within schools, our English and Maths tutorial videos can be used within a classroom setting to support the curriculum, or assignments can be set for students to work through independently, either at home or at school.
We ran trials in Summer 2020 for both GCSE and KS2 students learning at home, over six weeks and four weeks, respectively. Students in the trial spent 30-60 minutes a week revising Maths using the videos on our platform and were set assessments at the outset and the end of the trial. GCSE students improved their test scores on average 34.6% and KS2 students 28.6%.
We recently ran another community-based trial collaborating with Charlton Athletic Community Trust, where KS2 students used our platform for 30 minutes each in English and Maths at the CACT centre over six weeks. The students improved their Maths scores on average by 76.7% and their English by 100.5%.

The idea of the system is fantastic, however, the system still seems to have noticeable glitches that don't allow for accurate assessment. We have experienced problems with deleting classrooms and creating courses. The children often been left confused as the answer inputted has been marked wrong when it is clearly correct. The children do not use the whiteboard feature as it is too small.
George Maenami found SchoolOnline:
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“System can be quite tricky to manage and navigate. Some glitches to the system which make it difficult to organise classrooms, groups and courses.”

SchoolsOnline is a beneficial tool that has continually improved throughout the years to make it a must have resource to use alongside current teaching practice.
Christopher Perrott found SchoolOnline:
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Over the past three years, the use of SchoolOnline has dramatically supported the teaching of Mathematics, providing teachers with a bank of step-by-step video tutorials and resources whilst reducing teacher workload. What was originally used as a tool to supplement key concepts through guided practice has now been embedded into daily teaching lessons both as whole class activities, independent work or to help correct misconceptions that may arise. As content is quality assured, teachers feel confident in using the resources provided, especially as it has helped reduce the time that it originally had taken to find, locate and tailor to the needs of their children.”
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“Within the school, pupils across Year 6 have access to the SchoolOnline platform. Children are encouraged to watch tutorials and discuss the methods used before applying them to a series of questions. Furthermore, being able to revisit videos and resources, has allowed children to consolidate their learning before moving on too quickly. By providing open access, it has allowed children to develop greater ownership over their learning as they actively seek out the necessary resources to develop their understanding and reduce the attainment gaps.”
- Significantly improves teaching efficiency“Actively seeking out necessary resources can be time consuming for all teachers, especially when children are working at different levels of ability. SchoolsOnline provides teachers with the relevant tools required and as such has reduced the time it may have originally taken to plan and resource. Being able to personalise the learning has also allowed teachers to stretch their more able whilst also helping to consolidate the learning when misconceptions or errors may have arisen.”
- Significantly improves attainment“Individual needs of the children can be carefully considered through the online resources provided. They can be used to work alongside the lessons being taught, enhancing the delivery and consolidation task or they can be pushed out as extension tasks to stretch learners. Because of this, we have seen attainment continually improve year on year ensuring better outcomes for all learners.”
- Significantly builds student knowledge“Open access for our Year 6 children has meant they can revisit and review areas taught in school anywhere, any time. Whether it be through the teacher directing children explicitly to resources or children actively seeking out areas to improve, children have shown to be more confident and shown through their improved subject knowledge.”

Graham Macaulay found SchoolOnline:
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Through our use of SchoolOnline, we have been able to transform our teaching whilst also reducing teacher workload. Staff are able to easily select resources and content and align this to their teaching, due to the content being high quality they don't need to spend excessive time quality assuring the content.”
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“As SchoolOnline is available to all of our pupils, children are able to access the resource anywhere, anytime and on any device. This has resulted in our children using the tool in their own time, to help them overcome difficulties and reduce the attainment gaps.”
- Significantly improves teaching efficiency“Teachers are able to spend less time selecting resources and planning time and indeed, teacher time as the resources on school online can not only reduce planning time but also speed up the delivery of in person teaching. This enables the lesson pace to increase, resulting in more time to provide further challenge.”
- Significantly improves attainment“Through saving time planning and teaching, teachers are able to ensure lesson delivery is fully aligned to the individual needs of children in the class. This has resulted in an increase in attainment and better outcomes for our children.”
- Significantly builds student knowledge“Whilst School Online is used brilliantly in teaching, it is also accessible at home and this has really helped improve our children's knowledge. They are able to access the resource and develop their understanding and knowledge beyond the content covered in class teaching.”
