It is a neat and compact way of advancing phonics skills.

The cards are very versatile and great value for money. We use the cards with our EAL and SEND interventions as well as helping out our mid-phase admissions and their families who may be new to the country.
Debbie Alzapiedi found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“We have lots of mid-phase admission children whose first language is not English. We use the cards in school to accelerate their learning in the English language.”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“For those children in key stage 1 who are not making the expected progress in phonics and for mid-phase admissions, we send the cards home with them to their families. Most of our families have an EAL background and they appreciate the way the cards make things easy to understand.”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload

I've already recommended them to a few colleagues and cannot speak highly enough of them. I've shown them to colleagues who don't teach phonics and it has enlightened us all about how easy it is to bring AR technology into the classroom and provide much needed engagement to reluctant children, SEN children and those boys who never seem to latch onto anything else that is used to stimulate them in phonics.
Siân Rankin found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“The attention to detail hooks the children and provides them with encouragement that they once may have lacked. It allowed a once reluctant boy to become confident enough to want to keep trying and it was a pleasure to see the impact it had on his learning almost instantly. The independence children can gain from using them is also intriguing as one particular child is very reliant on adult input. Addressing gaps and hoaning in on particular phonemes allows the child to repeatedly practise until they develop confidence and in essence a better understanding. ”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“Due to the activities being child led it allows the teacher to stand back and observe them in a world where they are most confident - using technology, iPads and sound to provoke and enhance their knowledge. ”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload

A good interactive resource which has aided our parents of EAL children.
Heather Reynolds found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“EAL children have found it benefical to hear the correct prounication of sounds and their parents too. ”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“Not having to find sources for EAL children”
- Does not significantly reduce teacher workload

I think it's a really good resource. It's fun, bright and helps children and families. If there isn't a support strategy in place within a school then I think it would help, but it's even better for parents.
Claire Smith found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“there is some, we haven't been using them long and there has been a significant gap in the middle (christmas hols) but there is a high level of interest from the children and their recall of phase 2 alongside is starting to improve.”
- Slightly improves parent engagement“again, too soon to say, it fits in with our regular personalised provision and small group/targeted support so the only impact really is getting it embedded in the provision”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“looking at the resource I think it adds to the provision, it's interesting, captures children, creates a buzz that then transfers to other aspects of the curriculum, it also supports at home which is beneficial and I believe that's where it's strength is”

They are user friendly, they over progression through the cards, they help pupils learn independently.

- Moderately reduces attainment gap“Pupils using the cards during literacy rotations and part of home learning activities are then able to participate more in phonics sessions. ”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“Pupils can easily do follow up activities using the cards. ”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“In our school, they are not used consistently. Making it hard to improve all whole school processes. ”

I always do recommend them- even without the VR they are a fantastic resource 😊😊
Rose Edmondson found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“It is helping lower strainers recognise sounds to help them blend in their reading. With more frequent use and if we could afford to send cards home I think that the impact could be even more significant.”
- Moderately improves parent engagement“It means that I don’t have to access videos on pronunciation of the sounds or send links to websites to parents- instead the resources are in one place. I think if there were short clips added to the card with other examples of words containing the sounds and the sound in the word highlighted this could help extend the children so they could create sentences or captions using these words.”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“As I’m the only one currently using them I can’t really comment on this yet but I’m hoping to demonstrate their use to parents at our phonics meeting next week in the hope that some may want to look into it as well as other colleagues to.”

The cards were sold to the school as a tool for parent engagement but they are so diverse. We use them to close gaps in learning; to support mastery; for parents; for teachers' CPD.
Carly Frame found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“We use the cards to raise the attainment of our mid-phase admissions who have not yet started their phonics journey. The cards are easy-to-use and allow the mid-phase admissions to work independently when they are not working with the teacher.”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“Teachers often allow children and parents to take the cards home thus not spending time searching for additional phonics resources.”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload

It is the first product for a while that has been a bit different and has engaged both children, staff and parents on an equal level as well as supporting each three groups effectively.
Sarah Hunter found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“Children now keen to engage with phonic activities at school... and replicate at home”
- Significantly improves parent engagement“Cards are used as part of the phonic carousel meaning teachers have one less activity to prep or make”
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Consistency across classes and tear groups”

Parents are enthusiastic to use this resource to develop their own phonic knowledge and then support their children by applying these skills during reading/phonics. The feedback has been very positive and children and parents have loved it. This resource is mainly for parents, hence why it has not reduced teacher workload or improved teacher knowledge. However over the year, we could implement this in our school to enable interactive activities during Early morning work, EAL interventions and use the resource to support new staff.
Melissa found carters-yard-phonics-flashcards:
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“It supports parents in helping them understand the way phonics works and enables parents to support their children and prepare them for the phonic screening check. Throughout the year we will assess the children termly and monitor the progress and after the phonic screening check we will be able to see clearly the impact of using these cards as an extra resource. ”
- Does not significantly improve parent engagement“This is a resource that parents bought and therefore has not yet reduced teacher workload. Possibly throughout the year we could download it onto our system and use it in a range of activities.”
- Moderately reduces teacher workload
