Heather Mills, Teacher: Review of SumDog — Riverside Primary, Hullbridge (Year 5/6 Teacher) We use SumDog regularly for maths at Riverside Primary, and it has become an excellent tool to support both teaching and learning. It links seamlessly with the White Rose Maths scheme, which means I can easily align the activities and assessments with our curriculum. I begin each new unit with a baseline assessment on SumDog, which gives me clear insights into my pupils' starting points. This helps me plan my guided groups effectively and adapt lessons to meet the needs of my class. At the end of a unit, we retake the assessment, and the children genuinely enjoy seeing how much they’ve improved — it really boosts their confidence. At home, SumDog’s game-based approach keeps pupils engaged. They love the competitive element, especially during contests and challenges, which has helped motivate even the more reluctant learners. In class, I also use SumDog to set specific practice tasks for pupils who need extra support or reinforcement, making it a flexible resource for both intervention and enrichment. Overall, SumDog is a valuable addition to our maths toolkit — it supports assessment, personalised learning, and pupil engagement both in school and at home.

The ability to set work and to set the number of questions ad the timeframe to do the work means that you are always able to have the children focusing on either consolidating recent learning. Being able to assess something that was taught previously, and then building in regular practice sessions of previously taught concepts helps the me to plan efficiently for each student and build in the necessary routines to ensure that the children's maths fluency is maintained.

A Price, Teacher: The class engage with the fun factor of the games. The questions are at the level for even non-readers to access. The children look forward to their weekly Sumdog sessions and I can see from the data that my children are making good steps of progress. I like setting regular tasks for children to consolidate prior learning.

Bob.bob, Parent: TERRIBLE! She has been stuck here, on 1 question for 3 hours trying every answer, we've watched the video, googled it, I don't know what to do! SO disappointed! My child has cried 10+ times because of this!

Ccted, Parent: Don't often recommend apps etc but feel that the set up with the emails, parent portal, the bookwork checks and videos work well.

Parent, Self employed: Really unhappy with this ap and hope the school will reconsider it, my son is really good at math and enjoys his lessons, since the introduction of this app my son dreads maths and the automatic homework he’s spending hours frustrated trying to get it correct and the videos are no help at all please bring back hegarty maths, this app denotivates students and my son has gone from enjoying maths to dreading it. This is not how it should be.
