What is KUBO Coding?
KUBO is an educational hands-on and digital coding solution providing everything you need to get to grips with coding and computational thinking designed specifically for kids aged 4 to 10+.
Students are taught how to code through KUBOs unique TagTile® programming language making KUBO the only puzzle-like coding concept in the world – Literally making coding as easy as snapping together the pieces of a puzzle in order to create a sequence of code.

It is engaging for the children. There are lots of activities and differentiated extras that mean it can be used by different year groups and abilities.
Soraya Beech found KUBO Coding:
- Significantly improves attainment“understanding of coding and algorithms”
- Significantly builds student knowledge“the children are using coding language in a "play"setting.”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“The children have worked in small groups of 4/5 with a teacher or in pairs.”
- Does not significantly reduce teacher workload“At the moment a teacher needs to be with the activity but as the children become more familiar with how Kubo works, they could be left to solve problems and work out solutions therefore reducing the time needed by the teacher. Discussion with pupils is vital though to get them to explain how they did a task.”
- Significantly improves teacher knowledge and skills“The lessons are well thought out and easy to follow.”

If a colleague would look for a simple, straight forward way of introducing coding to young children I would definately recommend KUBO. I also like that there is a digital solution but it can also be used completly without any devices, hands-on and coding with tiles. So kids can experience coding without extra screen time.
Theresa found KUBO Coding:
- Significantly improves attainment“Used it with unversity students as an example for digital, creative learning while students are not at school. It was a positive example how problem solving can still be thaught from afar - although a mixture of hands-on and homelearning were the prefered option.”
- Significantly builds student knowledge“A very good and simple introduction to coding.”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“Yes, if students work together, but can also be used alone.”
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“After an initial explaination, KUBO can be used by the children themselves. Trial and fail can be used.”
- Slightly improves teacher knowledge and skills“KUBO has a lot of info for teachers and the KUBO academy - so there is loads to learn about how to teach coding but also how to cross curricular teach coding. But I don't think a teacher would learn a lot about coding themselves here - as said, it is a first coding experience, which will be quickly understood by the teacher.”

It is a fantastic piece of kit, that promotes problem solving and collaboration across all year groups.
Laura Hird found KUBO Coding:
- Slightly improves attainment
- Significantly builds student knowledge“Problem solving”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“It makes them problem solve together and they have to form their sentences correctly to get their point across”
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Everything is there, lesson plans, resources etc”
- Significantly improves teacher knowledge and skills“Through detailed lesson plans and help on the website”

High quality product, even the box/case is really smart looking and easy to store, Kubo himself is easy to use, children love it, it's encouraging learning without them knowing!
Joanne found KUBO Coding:
- Moderately improves attainment“Confidence using computational language which is then applicable to Maths”
- Moderately builds student knowledge“Knowledge of how computers rely on algorithms to follow a human's instructions”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“Teamwork skills are needed to debug and refine errors in programming”
- Slightly reduces teacher workload
- Significantly improves teacher knowledge and skills“The training that came with our Kubo was invaluable in making me feel confident to then deliver training to the year groups teams within school who would be using this kit.”

Although not the cheapest on the market, the ease of use and available resources make it a far superior alternative for beginners or those advanced coders.
Chris Bing found KUBO Coding:
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“Very helpful tool for block coding in KS1”
- Moderately improves teacher knowledge and skills“Knowledge can begin at a very basic Foundation Stage level and progress easily to KS2”
- Does not significantly save school money“At a costing of £2,500 for 12 learning packs (enough for us to have 1 between 2) it is a slightly more expensive alternative than other models on the market, but the hands on experience is vastly different”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“Students working in partners to try and solve and create their own coding works amazingly well”
- Moderately builds student knowledge“From KS1's first experience with block coding the tiles are a fantastic way to represent each line of code”
