What is Mathspace?

OUR MISSION: Every student can excel at maths with the right help at the right time

We built Mathspace 10 years ago with the vision of using technology to replicate the benefits of one-to-one teaching. Our step-by-step support helps students at the exact moment of misconception, helping them to learn and ultimately develop a growth mindset.

Mathspace lessons are comprehensive and curriculum aligned - check them out in our free public textbook - https://mathspace.co/textbooks/

Mathspace workbook assignments, which can be automatically adaptive or teacher-customised, include access to hints, next steps, videos, worked examples and textbook lessons to support students as they work through problems line-by-line.

Mathspace worksheets include fluency, problem solving and reasoning practice, and complement our class-leading online assignments.

Mathspace skills check ins are our low-stakes, regular and quick assessments that make use of AI to identify strengths, weaknesses and gaps across the curriculum in as little as 5 questions a week. Skills check ins provide both teachers and students with always accurate data and automatic task recommendations for students to close gaps and overcome weaknesses. The recommendations also take into account the topic areas that teachers are assigning to ensure that students can close their own unique gaps in pre-requisite areas first.

Recommended Usage

An independent study concluded that any use of Mathspace was beneficial to students' "likelihood of proficiency" but greatest gains were seen in the ">30 minutes per week" group. It has significantly reduced my workload, and removed robotic tasks from my week so I can focus on what matters.

Rob found mathspace:
  • Moderately improves attainment
In an end of term year group test, set 4 matched the attainment of set 3.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
Significantly less time spent preparing lessons and resources, and on marking student work. Less time answering simple queries in class, more time spent helping those who are struggling.

Best benefit is making the students show their working so we can see, as teachers, where they are making mistakes. It also helps students with Hints and Videos in case they get stuck with their homework or for revision.

Malcolm found mathspace:
  • Moderately improves attainment
Students have to show their methods and then usually has videos to help them through any problems they have.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency and productivity
Clear view of general misunderstandings from homework review and where their strengths lie.
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Marking is reduced and it helps target my planning for future lessons. Also allows students to be extended when they do an Adaptive assessment.
  • Slightly improves teacher knowledge and skills
Sometimes there are interesting ways of asking questions that I had not thought of before.
  • Moderately provides school data
We do use Mathspace in place of a written test on occasions, and the data is used in our reporting.
