What is nipinthebud.org?
Nip in the Bud ® is a charity that was set up to produce free resources for teachers, parents and carers, raising awareness about children’s mental health (between 4-15) or their experiences of living non-neurotypical lives in a neuro-typical world.
An NHS Survey in 2023 found that 20% of children aged 8 to 16 had a probable mental disorder in 2023, up from 12% in 2017, the year Nip in the Bud was launched. Easy access to evidence-based, expertise-led information and practical, tangible ways to help our children is more vital than ever. We chose film and podcasts because we all want to do a good job and we're all time-poor - so catching up on how to support the children in our lives needs to be at our fingertips.
What do we do:
We produce free films and other free resources for teachers, parents and carers. We aim to raise awareness and empower those caring for or working with children to recognise and respond to ALL children’s needs as early as possible.
Who are our resources for:
- Teachers or professionals working with children and young people in schools,
In schools, our resources are typically used as part of a broader mental health education program. Teachers and school counsellors use the resources to train staff to recognise early signs of mental health issues and develop strategies for supporting affected students. Our materials can be integrated into classroom activities or used in specialised training sessions. By incorporating our resources into your mental health initiatives, schools are empowered to create a more supportive and informed environment for your students.
“Thank you for this video. I have a young man in one of my classes that I thought had a learning disability. Now I have some strategies to help this young man.”– a teacher’s comment on one of our films.
- Parents and carers of children and young people
“Excellent information - so many others don't give practical tips” – a parent’s comment on one of our films

Who we work with:
We work with a range of paediatric psychologists, psychiatrists; mental health experts and educationalists (e.g: Dr Bettina Hohnen; Professor Dennis Ougirn, Dr Sian Williams, and David Trickey (consulting clinical psychologist) and Professor Barry Carpenter and Dr Dasha Nichols to name a few) to bridge the gap between experts and families or school communities with often urgently needed qualitative information.
In conjunction with these experts, we also get input from children and their families, who speak frankly and movingly. This is vital and helps contextualise children’s (and the families') experiences, to raise awareness and support other families who may feel alone.
An example of some of the teams that feature our resources and collaborate with us are Coram Life Education, Mentally Healthy Schools, Place 2 Be, ChickenShed Theatre, Children and Young People's Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC), South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and NCL Waiting Rooms NHS.

it is a very well researched and presented tool to impart information and training . It is accessible and considers the voice of the child. The visual impact through short videos with specialist commentary targets the significant points where answers are sought
