What is Scientific & Chemical Supplies Ltd?
Scientific & Chemical Supplies Ltd was founded in 1957 by Mr J R Turton MPS, a pharmacist and Mr K H Cartland, a WW2 fighter pilot. The company started in Sedgley, in the heart of the Black Country in the West Midlands, supplying a large number of foundries, metal finishing companies, and the automotive industry. In 1988 we moved to Bilston, West Midlands.
The 1990s The business grew spectacularly in the 1980s and 1990s and in 1996 we acquired a neighbouring property to meet our need for additional storage space and moved the head office to its current location in Livingstone Road. In late 1997 we acquired Hogg Laboratory Supplies Ltd to consolidate our position in the secondary and tertiary education science equipment market. We also won two major blue chip sole supply contracts in 1999, and established branches in Aberdeen to serve a large sole supply contract for the petro-chemical industry. In 1999 we also opened a branch in Cork to support a growing demand for industrial laboratory supplies; this branch has particular expertise in the dairy and pharmaceutical markets. The New Millennium: The start of the New Millennium also saw further acquisitions, and in 2001 we acquired the laboratory distribution business of A. J. Beveridge, part of Bunzl plc, based in Edinburgh. Meanwhile, we also acquired another neighbouring property in Bilston to expand storage capacity. In 2002 the business of R&J Wood Ltd in Paisley was acquired, and for the next decade we continued to operate from Paisley. Although this branch has now closed we continue to serve our customers in Scotland from our central warehouse stock in the West Midlands. In 2006 we acquired and refurbished additional neighbouring properties in Bilston, which were consolidated into creating one larger warehouse. New offices were constructed to enable us to expand our customer services, marketing and purchasing functions. Late in 2009 we acquired the leading Irish education science supplier, Shaw Scientific, and we are now working together to further develop the Irish market both in education and industry. 2012 witnessed further expansion on the Bilston site, with the acquisition of another adjacent property, providing a further 5000 square feet of storage capacity.
