What is Educake?

Educake is an award-winning online assessment and revision platform for science, English, geography, history, computer science, PE and maths.

Educake can help you do more teaching, by saving you time on setting homework, marking and analysing results: specification-matched tests can be set in seconds. You get immediate insights into strengths and weaknesses, and students get instant feedback.

Educake uses the principles of retrieval practice to help students recall, revise and retain past learning more effectively. Students can set themselves quizzes in Educake, and they’ll get the same immediate feedback that they get on their Educake homework and classwork.

Educake helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses, so they can focus on the topics that need more work. If they want some guidance, Educake’s algorithm creates topic suggestions and revision quizzes tailored to students’ needs.

Recommended Usage

Using Educake several times a week helps to check understanding of new topics. Setting revision of past topics enables students to actively demonstrate what they know and build stronger recall in a low-pressure environment.

The set-up and contact from the company is the best I've seen, and we have tried several edtech products in the past.

Reply from Educake:Thanks for leaving us a review Catherine! We're so pleased to hear the set-up and contact has been the best you've received.
Catherine Hartley found Educake:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Quiz questions already exist; monitoring homework completion is easy.
  • Slightly improves teaching efficiency
  • Slightly improves attainment
To early to tell I'm afraid!
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Retrieval quizzing and interleaving builds student knowledge - though at present we don't have the data for Educake's impact in student attainment, I'm expecting to see positive outcomes.

Good for certain tasks - would like to be able to set KS4 texts for KS3 students

Reply from Educake:Thanks so much for sharing your feedback! I'm happy to let you know that you can set any of our KS4 content to a KS3 class. If you choose "GCSE English" and "Create a quiz", you can then set it to your KS3 classes in the very last step. We're working on moving the literature content over so that you can find it under "KS3", but I hope this helps in the meantime! Please don't hesitate to contact us at support@educake.co.uk if there's anything else we can help with.
Sophie White found Educake:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
    Marking and setting of homework
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency

  • Slightly builds student knowledge

Educake has the most intuitve interface in comparison to any education software I have used previously. They have lots of little features that help teacher workload and make the quizzes meaningful. If creating a quiz on other platforms a teacher will just see the mark unless they go and look at each question individually. On Educake, there is a dashboard for teachers to see the results for each question and how far through the test each student is. The ablity for students to query their mark means they don't lose marks for things that should be accepted (for example if they have used a plural term or silly spelling error). The ability to retake tests is another feature I love. Although Educake is expensive, the features address all my frustrations with other quizzing software and the customer support is second to none. Students also enjoy the quizzes, as long as they aren't too long!

Reply from Educake:Thanks for leaving us a review Tanya! The whole team really enjoy hearing how Educake is helping teachers and that students are enjoying it too.
Tanya found Educake:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
The interface is exceptionally intuitive. It is quick to set retrieval practice quizzes for homework or lesson starters. The template feature allows tests to be set up and re-used.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Using an Educake test after teaching theory allows common misconceptions to be seen. I particularly like the way student progress with the tests can be seen in real-time from the teacher dashboard. The feature that enables students to query their answer is extremely useful and it makes results more accurate. Setting the same test a few weeks after the initial the a quick way to see how much has been retained. Perfect for self-marking retrieval practice.
  • Slightly improves attainment
I have been using Educake for 2 years. There have not been formal examinations during this time so the evidence for improved attainment isn't clear. We were using other methods of setting quizzes and knowledge checks prior to Educake. Educake has made it easier for this to happen but I'm unsure about raising attainment in comparison to other methods. The only disadvantage is I don't always trust the content enough for students to set their own test. Most of the content is superb but it can go off spec. I have found Educake support to be second to none with this.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Educake acts as a useful springboard to prompt students on areas they need to revise or get help with. Students will often take a test, read their notes and then retake the test. The ability to retake multiple times is a brilliant feature.

Educake does what you say it does. Even though it is not yet properly aligned to the Northern Ireland curriculum, it is an extremely useful tool for a good majority of the year for most classes.

Reply from Educake:Thanks for your feedback, the whole team really appreciate hearing how Educake has helped your school.
Michael Linden found Educake:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Data collection on student engagement. Making tests targeted for current learning. In order to make good use of Educake, work input is necessary.... an extra effort on top of traditional assessment, but it is well worth it.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Homework is planned well and scheduled. Feedback is very easy to provide.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Statistical analysis of student engagement shows a direct correlation between questions answered and performance in internal and external exams. This indicates that students who repeat quizzes multiple times learn key facts.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Key terminology and facts are built through repetition, when students make notes based on what they learn through information in questions and answers.

For a virtual class, Educake simply has one of the easiest interface for teachers to use, making it easy to gauge student effort and progression. I would say 9/10 because there is certainly the possibility of not having impact if Educake was improperly used. For example students could be demotivated if being given regular quizzes on topics they have not covered in the academic year as part of “spaced repetition” and “retrieval practice”. I understand also that Educake is currently trialling short answer questions as well. It would benefit to have question banks that are more challenging and have lower proportions of simple recall. Overall, extremely useful product for online learning from my perspective as teacher of a virtual science class as well as from my students’ perspectives with whom I have spent time discussing their learning strategies.

Reply from Educake:It's great to hear you're finding Educake useful for virtual classes - thank you for sharing!
Marco Narajos found Educake:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
This is a review with my experiences of using Educake for Flexi School with a virtual/online-only science class for KS4. I used Educake significantly for starter activities, deliberate practice, and plenary activities. It made it easy to see common issues with understanding which allowed me to adjust instruction as part of assessment for learning and formative assessment.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
I can easily see which questions have common misunderstandings in their responses. I can then open up this question and use this as a starter activity for the following lesson - students are online and so they can re-do the quizzes and this helps them to perceive a sense of progression in their learning.
  • Moderately improves attainment
No hard evidence of impact on attainment but the students who are working virtually value Educake quizzes as part of self-regulatory strategies for learning.
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
Students receive corrective feedback at the end of the quiz, following which students can redo the quiz and attempt a better score.

It is just brilliant! A huge bank of questions where homework of a high quality is easily and quickly set. The auto mark saves teacher time but gives immediate feedback to students, allowing the teacher to focus on analysis rather that the process of marking. Easily accessible to students and no messing around with excuses of ‘I have forgotten my homework’! Allows students to develop their independence by answering their own questions and the study guides at KS4 are a brilliant additional resource for students to revise from.

It can be useful for schools who would benefit from having a greater consistency in their homework policy across teachers of different science subjects

Reply from Educake:Hi Marco, thanks so much for leaving us a review. I hope you won't mind if we reach out to you on another forum to see if we can chat in a bit more detail. It sounds like your insight could be really helpful to us!
Marco Narajos found Educake:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Less time needed to check whether students are completing homework with obvious metrics to share with parents
  • Not significantly improves teaching efficiency
Sometimes there are good sets of questions that allow for learners to undertake deliberate practice
  • Slightly improves attainment
I have studied the relationship between Educake completion (number of questions completed) and progress made between summative assessments (learners from year 9-11) and there is virtually no association. Where there is an association is first attempt score average on Educake and learners’ overall attainment (GCSE grade), but this relationship disappears if we take into account students’ prior attainment by correcting for it using FFT20
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
Recall questions are perceived by students to be useful for those with low prior attainment

Educake is a fantastic platform for students to apply their knowledge and understanding. By doing quizzes, they can increase their confidence in key ideas and gain feedback instantly. Students being able to view study guides and set themselves quizzes adds to the benefits. The variety of questions and easy to use platform significantly reduce teacher workload for homework. Being able to view data for your class allows you to adapt your lessons to include key ideas students struggle with. You can also easily view your mark sheet meaning you do not need to keep a separate spreadsheet of who has completed homework and who hasn't. The new app and teacher platform updates mean that more students can access the quizzes and that staff can keep their screens tidy, allowing easy access to previously set quizzes.

Emma Robertson found Educake:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Easy to see which questions students got wrong and tailor re-teaching of key ideas to this.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
Educake can be used to set practice questions and as retrieval activities ensuring the students see many examples of questions to check their knowledge and understanding.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Students who engage with Educake tend to do better. Lots of practice helps the key ideas stick in students memories.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
By revealing the correct answers students get immediate feedback allowing them to learn from quizzes.

It is costly - our own school struggles for this budget and I am not sure I'll be able to renew next year even though I'd love to. There are a few additional features I would recommend that I think would be (fairly) easy enough to build into the website that would give additional avenues.

Reply from Educake:Thanks for your feedback - definitely interested in hearing about additional features you would like to see. You can contact us at any time at support@educake.co.uk
Will found Educake:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Marking of homework is simplified. During 'blended learning' (online) it was a good means to set work and give feedback.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
Streamlines homework setting - enables marks of homework to be collated. It is also an "easy" focus to provide for students for additional work / revision etc.
  • Slightly improves attainment
I am still looking at the evidence for this.
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
Students may come to a lesson and say "Ahh this was on Educake the other night". They also build on learning undertaken in the lesson.
