The programme provides personalised learning that supports students in developing word study, grammar, and comprehension skills at a pace that suits them, helping to build confidence and improve literacy outcomes. For teachers, the detailed progress data makes it easy to identify learning gaps, monitor the impact of interventions, and plan targeted support without adding to workload. It is particularly valuable for intervention programmes and SEND provision, as it provides clear evidence of progress over time. Overall, Lexia is easy to use, supports high-quality literacy teaching, and provides meaningful data that can inform classroom practice and whole-school decision-making.
Emma Griffiths found Lexia Reading Skills Software:
- Builds student knowledge“A good example of the impact on student knowledge can be seen through Lexia Learning, which supports reading development through a clear focus on grammar, comprehension, and word study. In word study, students build a stronger understanding of phonics and spelling patterns, which helps them decode unfamiliar words more confidently and improves overall reading accuracy. In comprehension, learners are guided to understand texts more deeply by working on vocabulary, sentence meaning, and inference skills, helping them move beyond just finding answers to actually understanding what they read. The grammar element supports students in recognising how sentences are structured, which improves both their reading fluency and their ability to make sense of more complex writing. Together, these areas help students become more secure and independent readers over time.”
- Provides school data
- Improves attainment“Yes, Lexia helps to improve attainment by developing key literacy skills, including word study, grammar, and comprehension. As students strengthen these areas, they become more confident and accurate readers, which supports progress across the wider curriculum. The programme adapts to each student's ability, allowing them to work on the skills they need most, helping them make steady progress and achieve better outcomes in reading assessments over time.”
- Reduces attainment gap“Yes, Lexia can help reduce the attainment gap by providing personalised learning that targets each student's individual literacy needs. Students who are working below age-related expectations receive additional practice in areas such as word study, grammar, and comprehension, allowing them to strengthen the skills they find most challenging. Because the programme adapts to each learner's progress, students can work at their own pace and gradually close gaps in their learning. This is particularly beneficial for pupils receiving interventions, those with SEND, and disadvantaged learners, helping them make progress towards the same literacy expectations as their peers.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“Yes, Lexia helps improve teaching efficiency by providing teachers with detailed, real-time data on students' progress in areas such as word study, grammar, and comprehension. This allows staff to quickly identify learning gaps and target interventions where they are needed most, rather than spending time manually assessing every pupil. As students work independently through personalised activities, teachers can focus on supporting individuals or small groups who require additional help. The programme also reduces the time needed to track progress, making it easier to monitor the impact of interventions and plan the next steps for learning.”

I think it is a good system, but not perfect. In Scotland the children can struggle with the English accent. If children are given 15 minutes to work on Lexia, but they don't complete a unit, they can get the same task over and over again because they are not organised/ efficient and can't get logged in can complete the unit in the given time. Most of the younger pupils enjoy going on Lexia. They like the graphics and rewards.
Jill Kent found Lexia Reading Skills Software:
- Builds student knowledge“I have heard children say, "I learned this on Lexia" when doing spelling or writing assignments.”
- Provides school data“I use the Lexia reports to identify where children are struggling. I use the data with parents to show progression. We are able to compare their work with the expected level for their age.”
- Improves attainment“When the children actually put the time into the program there is noticeable difference. We can evidence it in their written work.”
- Reduces attainment gap“When children and their teachers and families all commit to doing the work we see the children working through the levels at a steady pace. Unfortunately some parents and teachers are not as dedicated to using it.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“Lexia picks up on where children are struggling and breaks the task down and gives more support.”

I gave Lexia a score of 9 because it has been a very positive addition to our reading provision. The programme was straightforward to implement, is easy for both staff and pupils to use, and has kept pupils engaged and motivated. The reporting features provide clear data on participation and progress, making it easy to monitor impact. Most importantly, we have seen improvements in reading ages across many pupils, with some making particularly significant gains, giving us confidence that the programme is having a real impact on reading outcomes.
David Fox found Lexia Reading Skills Software:

- Provides school data“One of the most positive impacts of implementing Lexia has been the ability to evidence progress through meaningful school data. We have been able to track pupil engagement with the programme, demonstrating consistently high levels of participation and completion. Alongside this, our data shows measurable improvements in reading ages across many pupils, with some making significant gains over a relatively short period. Having clear, accessible data has enabled us to monitor progress effectively, identify pupils who need additional support, and celebrate the positive impact Lexia is having on reading outcomes across the school.”
