I love that the linear approach runs right from Nursery up to Year 4 and so there is consistency and clarity in the learning that the children are doing. I also like the way it introduces the children to a vital number fluency step ahead of when they will need it in their maths lessons so that they are as prepared as possible for new mathematical concepts.

Katey Dale found Winning With Numbers:
  • Builds student knowledge
The children are more regularly able to apply the speedy number knowledge into their everyday maths lessons and have been heard telling each other quick ways to get to the answer using a past Win in WWN.
  • Improves teaching efficiency
The system is a linear approach that builds on previous wins that have been covered. This gives teachers a clear approach in the steps needed to get the children to be number fluent without it being arduous to staff.
  • Improves attainment
The children were able to grasp new concepts in their daily maths lessons more easily as they were not needing to use 'brain space' to work out the number fluency facts. We have not used the assessments as yet and so this will be interesting to do in order to track the children's progress and attainment.
  • Improves teacher knowledge
It does require some effort from the individual teacher to ensure that they watch the relevant videos, think about past wins and make use of the booklet. All these steps clearly indicate the 'why' behind each step and the pathway the children are taking, therefore increasing the teacher's knowledge too.
  • Reduces attainment gap
Although we work as a whole class in general there were opportunities for those that were not on track to be able to work at their own level using devices and so focus on steps that help to close the gaps. It is hoped that we will have more access to devices in order to use other strategies to support learning and close gaps further.
