8/10 - It's a great resource and really makes vocabulary accessible. Although I understand that some elements of Widgit Online need to be under the premium memberships, I would like to see additional languages being provided as standard so that cost of the service isn't a barrier for EAL and bilingual speakers from getting the support they need. This feels at odds with Widgit's ethos.

Reply from Widgit:Hi Sam, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with Widgit. It’s amazing to hear how you’re using it in your teaching and the difference it’s making for your students! We also really appreciate your feedback on making additional languages more accessible. Ensuring cost isn’t a barrier while continuing to sustain and improve our services is a top priority for us, and your suggestion is something we’ll carefully consider as we continue to develop our offerings. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts – it means a lot!
Sam found Widgit:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Creating resources quickly using the symbol systems that are understood by our students enables me to quickly make information accessible to students. I can be responsive to their needs as quickly as my time allows.
  • Slightly reduces attainment gap
The students I work with tend to have severe SLCN needs, so I tend to work on a person-centred basis rather than measuring to attainment and academic outcomes
  • Moderately increases student collaboration
I support students I work with to edit symbol colours, or choose symbols that best represent vocabulary for them to personalise their experience
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
I think once a symbol system is established, yes. I find often teachers forget the need to explain the symbol and teach its meaning (which can take longer initially). I think there is an assumption that providing the symbol is the only support needed, rather than it being used a resource to aid you to make things accessible
  • Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing
I think its interesting to put these two ideas together. However, I do think that when a child can access vocabulary around emotions in a way they understand these two things can be impacted positively.
