What is Tassomai?

Tassomai is an adaptive learning program helping secondary schools impact on attainment levels in a range of subjects at Key Stages 3 and 4.

Originally designed to support GCSE science, Tassomai has expanded to cover maths, English language and science at KS3/4 and English literature, geography, history and computer science at KS4 only. MFL vocab courses are also available.

Tassomai’s multiple choice micro-quizzes reinforce knowledge through targeted repetition, like a flashcard. The quizzes are supported by short explainer videos and curated links to relevant external resources. An in-built, AI-powered tutor called 'Mai' is also available to help answer questions from students. At the same time the algorithm is learning each student’s strengths and weaknesses; it uses this information to target the gaps in a student’s knowledge and provide feedback to teachers on which areas individuals and entire classes need help with.

Tassomai saves teachers time in two ways; it teaches AO1s, while also reducing the time they need to spend analysing their students, meaning they can focus on teaching and targeting intervention.

As well as being used in schools, Tassomai is also available for private subscribing families, supporting learners from year 3 to year 11 in all of the subjects mentioned above, plus French and Latin.

Schools and private subscribing families can both trial Tassomai for free. Learn more at www.tassomai.com.

Recommended Usage

Our product presents students with a target: a “Daily Goal” of multiple choice questions for them to try and answer, on average the goal is about 40 questions per day.

The teacher dashboard presents students’ usage over the past 7 days, and classifies engagement under three headings: Engaged (students who’ve completed their Daily Goal 4+ times over the last 7 days), Struggling (students who’ve completed their DG 2-3 times) or Lapsed (students who’ve completed less than 2 DG). However, not all schools use the DG system as a means of measuring engagement.

Tassomai is accessed through a web browser or via our mobile app and it doesn't use a lot of mobile data.

Set Up

First, schools are sent a setup form, in which we take the information required to build orders to our system. During setup, we recommend schools book in a training demo, with at least two members of staff present. Once setup is complete, all staff receive a launch email, containing their school’s unique activation code. This code is then used by their students on our website to create their accounts. Students select their class from a dropdown which is created from the information provided on the setup form. Both staff and students require access to an internet-enabled computer or laptop in order to login to Tassomai. Tassomai is supported by all major internet browsers. Additionally, students with a smartphone will be able to download our mobile app for free and access Tassomai anywhere with an internet signal.

TrainingIn PersonLive OnlineDocumentationVideos

We strongly encourage schools (particularly new schools) to book a 30 minute training demo.

Conducted via screen-share software, unless specifically requested to be in-person, departments will go through how Tassomai works from both a staff and student perspective, with time left at the end for general Q&A.

These can be filmed and shared with the school afterwards as a reference point, or for teachers who were unable to make the original demo. We also have lots of helpful content for teachers and students on our blog.

Tassomai has had an overwhelmingly positive impact on pupil effort and progress whilst simultaneously reducing teacher workload and allowing staff to amend their teaching to take account of misconceptions and tricky areas for pupils. Checking homework couldn't be easier which has also had a positive impact on communication with parents and carers. The whole team at tassomai are friendly, efficient and innovative - they are a pleasure to work with!

Holly Bradshaw found Tassomai:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Homework is set in a matter of seconds each week and yet is truly tailored and meaningful for each pupil. Tassomai is user friendly and makes checking completion and quality of homework really simple. By using technology to deliberately target the areas pupils need to work on more, it feeds back information to help with lesson planning and specific pupil intervention, cutting out hours of trawling through data manually.
  • Significantly provides school data
We use the data from tassomai on a daily basis to measure pupil engagement with not only homework but also independent learning. This is then communicated with parents/carers on a regular basis. We also use information on the accuracy of answers to inform lesson planning and individual intervention with particular students.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
The data that tassomai provides on both individual pupils and classes as a whole can be used to great effect planning lessons e.g informing retrieval practise starter tasks and forming synoptic links for overlearning. The fact that tassomai enables this with minimal admin time has had an overwhelmingly positive effect on teacher work/life balance as well as pupil engagement.
  • Significantly improves attainment
We fundamentally believe that tassomai has played a key role in ensuring that our GCSE exam results for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Combined Science have all been above the National average at grades 4+ and 7+ for the past 2 years.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Pupils have a much better overview of each subject as a whole and how one topic can relate to another. They are in excellent habits during their retrieval practise starter questions each lesson and are much more confident when completing independent practise questions.

Reply from Tassomai:Thanks for your review Thomas, really great to read your comments about the impact Tassomai's had so far!

  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Reduced tracking of students, reduced tracking of marks, reduced setting of homework manually
  • Moderately provides school data
Provides insight into students gaps to provide direction and topic selection for directed review time, starter activities, revision.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
Allows teachers to use the data gained to fill gaps in student knowledge as they appear. Using Tassomai as formative assessment prior to lessons - Tassomai exposes students to knowledge prior to lessons and it is evident that students recall the information during lessons speeding up the teaching.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Homework completion has improved. Mainly due to the quick and easy nature of Tassomai and providing students with choice when it comes to the topics they can focus on.
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Its evident from teaching students (particularly year 9) that they are building knowledge prior to their lessons - starter activities and question responses are much more improved and students actively say they recognise content from their homework.

Has been very useful and great easy access for students (can do on phone on bus to school etc). To improve it would be good to have breakdowns of what students are commonly getting wrong in our school compared to similar centres. We got sent this as a separate spreadsheet but a built in part of the software to do this and export to csv would be amazing.

I have already recommended it to Maths and English as well as the trial for Business and Computer Science. It definitely suits certain subjects more than others.

Gavin Terry found Tassomai:
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
Using it as homework assignments reduces time spent marking work and allows teachers to focus their attention on where there are gaps in a students understanding
  • Significantly provides school data
We have been able to get an idea of how much time students are committing to the subject independently. We can see how many questions are being answered, the accuracy of those answers, and which topics within a Science subject students are answering easily or having difficulty with.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Establishing routines with Tassomai has helped. Whether it is being used as a starter, plenary, or for homework, it allows a quick assessment of every individual in the class and provides an independent resource for students to use.
  • Slightly improves attainment
It is perhaps a little early for us to see this yet - we may know more once the IGCSE results come out. In shorter term end of unit tests I haven't seen a noticeable increase in attainment. Having said that, students do appreciate the additional revision resource. It should help with our CIE IGCSE Paper 1/2 as these are multiple choice.
  • Slightly builds student knowledge
Tassomai is great at testing student knowledge and identifying areas of weakness to both the teacher and the student. Given it creates a unique learning experience for each student it helps them to focus on areas they need to. There is often a tendency for some students to simply repeatedly guess. If it had a feature where there is a simple explanation of why an answer is correct or incorrect it would have a bigger impact.
