What is Twig World?

Twig features thousands of high-quality, curriculum-aligned science, maths and geography videos for students aged 11–16, along with worksheets, lesson plans, quizzes and diagrams.

Twig resources are easy to use, slotting into existing lesson plans and being particularly suited to distance learning, with a built-in Assignment feature that lets teachers set homework and view progress. Twig films can be used in a variety of different ways – as an introduction to new topics, to provide visual reinforcement of instruction, or as revision.

Twig allows students to learn at their own pace. Students who find topics difficult can watch videos again, using glossary videos as additional aids, while others can use Twig’s unique Mindmap and the topic extension questions to explore further and extend their knowledge. Onscreen keywords, closed captions and downloadable transcripts make Twig videos accessible to students with additional support needs or those whose second language is English.

It is a little expensive for our budget and occasionally there are not videos for particular topics - otherwise 10

sarah diebelius found Twig World:
  • Moderately improves attainment
Our students can struggle with English and the clear videos, well paced and with subtitles really helps them with this
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
Pitched at a really good level in comparison to using you tube videos. Can be used for KS3 and KS4 to introduce a topic as well as consolidate a topic
  • Moderately reduces attainment gap
supports lower ability by being accessible with their English language abilities. Supports higher ability in accompanying questions
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency and productivity
we can embed the videos into our lesson planning. The experiment demos are particularly helpful in these times of online teaching
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
stops us having to search for appropriate videos on other resources. we know TWIG will be pitched at right level. Also helps with experiment ideas

Twig is hands-down my #1 favorite and most valued teaching resources. I used Twig in my last school (Jakarta Intercultural school) for 8 years, and begged my current team and administrators to purchase a subscription for our students and school. My team immediately understood how the quality, versatility and supportive nature of the ever-expanding video collection could positively impact our classroom environment, and jumped right on board.

Hugh

Head of Science

Used Twig World for 4 years

Aug 2020

I recommend it all the time. I now share our account with the geography department and they also found it a useful tool during remote learning.

Hugh found Twig World:
  • Moderately improves attainment
It engages some students who otherwise find concentration a problem. It is also useful for stretching the more able children.
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
There are lots of films that sit slightly outside the mainstream syllabus which allows the boys to explore around a given topic. The way the videos are presented, as a web with the most relevant material near the centre, helps the children to focus on core ideas or to spread their wings a little more widely.
  • Slightly reduces attainment gap
I have not done a comparison, so the honest answer is that I don't know. Twig has become as much a part of my teaching Y5 to Y8 as any other school resource. It was used a lot during remote learning to set tasks for pupils and I use it in class and during private study sessions. I don't use any text books so it is one the ways that I support the notes I produce for the students - I do know that they are always very happy to use Twig.
  • Slightly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
Again, I have not tested this and 'teaching efficiency' is not a phrase we often use. It is a little utilitarian. At the age group with which we work, there is more emphasis on engaging/enthusing and less on achieving any specific set of goals.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
It has been a life saver when one of my colleagues was away from school. It allowed me to set structured lessons around a body of information set by Twig so that follow up tasks could be completed. It removed the need for a specialist to cover the missed lessons and ensured that the students remained confident that they were making good progress. I am sure that it reduced grumbling!

Craig Murray found Twig World:

Kay found Twig World:
  • Slightly improves attainment

  • Moderately builds student knowledge
Students gain a clear detailed understanding of the key information
  • Slightly reduces attainment gap
    Not possible to measure
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency and productivity
It saves me time looking for videos of youtube which are often poor quality or incorrect. Instead of students listening to my own long-winded explanations they get short, to-the-point explanations accompanied by great visuals.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
I don't have to look for videos on youtube. I can use the transcripts to make my own worksheets. I can set videos as homeworks.
