Alps provides a very visual identifier of progress which allows both under and overperformance to be very easily identified. The value added measures are easy to explain to members of staff who are perhaps not the most comfortable with the very complex equations found in some other value added measures. Being able to very easily explain where the thermometer outcomes have come allows the College to spend more time on what really matters; identifying areas of strengths and weakness and reacting with targeted interventions.
David Potts found Alps:
- Improves attainment“The Alps platform has allowed the College to be able to focus on particular cohorts of students whose improvement would have a meaningful impact on outcomes. The visual nature of the platform has allowed the College to present this information to staff in a clear and easy to understand way. A particular focus on learners with mid prior achievement has allowed the College to increase its high grade A*-B percentage from 57.9% to 65.1% in three years.”
- Improves school processes“The College uses Alps with its internal assessment procedures which allows a clear value added performance to be seen across different cohorts in-year which allows for timely interventions.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“Through being able to identify the performance of different cohorts in- year, more targeted interventions have been possible which has allowed teachers to place more focus on a smaller cohort of students.”

I would rate this an 8 out of 10. While MTG and mean score variance across subjects provide a useful baseline for target setting, we need to layer additional expectations onto this to ensure that every subject is working towards at least an ALPS 3, irrespective of target distributions or subject difficulty. Its greatest strength is how it sharpens our conversations about progress, making it easier to identify where support is needed and celebrate where practice is strong.
Oliver Watkins found Alps:
- Improves attainment“Using the What If function enables us to model potential outcomes for individual students, helping us pinpoint who needs targeted intervention and the specific strategies that will make the greatest impact.”
- Improves school processes“ALPS Connect helps standardise target‑setting and makes progress visible in real time, giving staff a shared, evidence‑based picture of how students are performing. This leads to sharper interventions, stronger departmental reviews, and more strategic decision‑making across the school.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“streamlines teacher workload by giving staff instant, clear insight into which students need attention - allowing time to: plan, feedback, and focus resources to the classroom”

Easy to use, clear national benchmarking, excellent range of tools between strategic, subject and individual student analysis. It has saved so much time and been invaluable when designing interventions and support mechanisms for our students, as well as accountability processes for our subjects and staff.
found Alps:
- Improves attainment“ALPS allows us to use precise data to design interventions. By using student individual value added scores, we can pinpoint any student in any subject in terms of their attainment and progress. This visibility has led to targeted one-to-one support that pushes our learners to achieve the best results they an.”
- Improves school processes“We share ALPS target grades with our students in sixth form early on, along with suggested apprenticeship opportunities and universities students should aim for. This helps build a culture of personalised aspiration. The ALPS thermometer also leads to a healthy accountability across subjects in the school, so departments can see where they sit nationally and target-set accordingly.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“ALPS reduces the data-crunching burden on teachers, so using the ALPS tools including ad hoc groups and 'what if' analysis reduces their admin time. This gives teachers more time to focus on practical pedagogy and which interventions can be put in place to provide maximum impact for students.”

ALPS has strengthened evidence-based decision-making across the school, improved the focus and efficiency of teaching, and contributed positively to outcomes for students.
Cheryl Rosen found Alps:
- Improves attainment“The use of ALPS has had a positive impact on student attainment by enabling earlier identification of underachievement. Analysis of ALPS data highlighted a small number of subjects where progress was below expectations, prompting targeted departmental support and adjustments to teaching strategies. As a result, subsequent cohorts showed improved progress scores and a higher proportion of students meeting or exceeding their target grades.”
- Improves school processes“The use of ALPS has strengthened our self-evaluation and quality assurance processes by providing a consistent, externally benchmarked measure of progress. Departments now use ALPS data as part of their review cycle, ensuring discussions about performance are evidence-based and focused on impact rather than perception.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“The use of ALPS has improved teaching efficiency as by identifying specific cohorts, subjects, or groups that are underperforming, teachers are able to target planning, support, and intervention more precisely.”

Alps Connect is an indispensable tool for our A-Level provision, earning a 10 for its ability to transform complex data into clear, actionable "people conversations." By focusing on Value-Added tracking, the platform moves the dialogue beyond raw attainment and empowers us to see exactly how we are stretching every learner relative to their potential. Its real-time modelling is vital for our AP3 data cycles, allowing us to identify departmental trends with total transparency and provide students with evidence-based targets. Ultimately, it provides a universal language for excellence that ensures our interventions are proactive, consistent, and centred on student growth.

ALPs enables us to set realistic challenging targets where pupils know what is possible for them to achieve and teachers also know what they are capable of and adapt strategies accordingly.
Shaun Pope found Alps:
- Improves attainment“ALPs minimum expected grades are used to set ambitious targets for pupils and tracked. Intervention plans have lead to our pupils often being in the top 10% for progress based upon ALPs”
- Improves school processes“Teachers are familiar with the ALPS system and use the grades to work out the value being added to each pupil. School monitoring and evaluation of impact is therefore robust and meaningful.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“teachers will use ALPS tracking to identify where pupils are and then reflect upon/change pedagogical strategies to close any gaps.”

We've only had ALPS for a short time and, as a result, I don't think we've seen the full impact of it all yet. We are gradually moving all processes across to ALPS. Staff are very keen on it.
Mark Pike found Alps:
- Improves attainment“We've used it with all staff to unpick their exams analysis and use the 'What if tool' to explore possible interventions moving forward. We've only had ALPS for a short time so it's difficult to provide lots of impact data.”
- Improves school processes“We've found it much clearer on reporting progress and identifying students who require intervention. Our subject leaders have found it much easier to find all the data compared to our previous system.”
- Improves teaching efficiency“Yes, it helps us target those key students. It also quickly shows progress of key groups of students.”
Oct 2025
It is a system which is easy to understand and universally applicable across different subjects at KS4 and KS5. Recent website changes have resulted in a much improved interface. It helps us to recognise achievement and target areas for further improvement.
Matthew Van Alderwegen found Alps:
- Improves attainment“It has enabled us to highlight pupils and subjects or even sets where pupils are not progressing as far as they are in other subjects. Sometimes this might not be by much but by targeting areas where improvement seems feasible it makes an impact to our overall outcomes. This year we achieved an ALPS score 1 at GCSE.”
- Improves school processes“We review examination results annually. ALPS scores and VA feedback is now factored into how departments feedback to the Senior Leadership team on how students have done.”
