Alan Green

Assistant Head of Mathematics

Used Eedi monthly for 3-4 years

I love the fact that it exposes and addresses misconceptions. I just wish it was easier to scan through student responses. Even making it easier to scan through questions in an assignment before setting it would help. I love that there is further support available for students who continue to struggle on a topic.

Alan Green found Eedi:
  • Does not save school money
  • Does not significantly reduce teacher workload
  • Slightly improves teaching efficiency
Perhaps if I could get more classes / teachers using it.
  • Slightly improves attainment
I think so. Sometimes. Hard to quantify in early stages [Bad choice of 2 extreme positive response or 'Neutral']
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
I think so, but still early days. And need to encourage more pupils to 'buy-in' to it.

Used Eedi daily for 1-2 years

Mar 2023

I think eedi is excellent and also easy to use. I think it is a great tool for developing and practicing key skills and I like the way it is aligned to White Rose Maths which my colleagues use.

Jeremy Guyler found Eedi:
  • Slightly saves school money
The service is free but it does allow teachers save time marking so they become more efficient.
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
By marking and providing instant feedback and support to students without the teacher needing to always get involved when the student is unsure how to answer a question.
  • Moderately improves teaching efficiency
Because eedi gives real time results as the children work I often stop the class when a particular question causes a lot of errors. I can then pull the question up onto the class interactive board and discuss solutions with the class together. This is great for dealing with misconceptions and for informing my teaching into areas of need.
  • Moderately improves attainment
I use eedi as a revision and practice tool for learning we have already done. This keeps learning fresh and gives the students more practice than they would experience in the normal maths lesson.
  • Moderately builds student knowledge
By giving them problems to solve but then intervening when they need support. The fact children are expected to explain their answers also broadens and deepens understanding.

Mark Dunn

Maths Tutor

Norwich Maths Tutor, England

Used Eedi occasionally for 1-2 years

Jan 2023

For a classroom teacher, it could be good, once they find their way around it. For tutoring, it seems likely to have limited value. The one time used it with a real student for tutoring, the built in tutoring was painful. It didn't really suit my student. This new aspect of Eedi needs more thought, especially when used with a live (possibly private) tutor.

Mark Dunn found Eedi:
  • Does not save school money
Hard to use for tutoring just one or two students.
  • Does not significantly reduce teacher workload
Taking too long to find relevant material. Not supporting free text prior to multiple choice prompts. This could be a powerful technique for many (NOT ALL) diagnostic questions. It could provide much more insight into misconceptions. Especially if combined with students giving a level of confidence in their answer (RAG, say). A confidently wrong answer needs a different response to a low confidence right or wrong answer.
  • Does not significantly improve teaching efficiency
When tutoring and using Diagnostic Questions with the student, there is more chance to discuss the options first. Eedi doesn't really support this. This is another way that free text input on suitable question structures would be valuable prior to offering multiple choice answers.
  • Does not significantly improve attainment
Having not used it because it didn't fit my work style well, I cannot give any real concrete examples.
  • Does not significantly build student knowledge
Have not used it to really say. I found it useful to experiment with, but it was frustrating.

Dec 2022

As a teacher I find it easy to use, it saves me time, it provides support for all students in homework tasks and ICT based lessons, builds independent learning skills in students, motivates students (prize draws), and involves parents - what more can we ask?

Rebecca Kirkman found Eedi:
  • Significantly saves school money
There is no subscription for EEDI and so we may not renew other subscriptions later this year (possible saving of £500). We also use EEDI Tutor Plus to provide catch up intervention for 100 students for 12 months - we couldn't support this many students with other tutor-type interventions.
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
    1) Setting a homework task that is diagnostic allows you to save time on planning "checking prior knowledge" lessons, particularly at the beginning of KS4 units. You can pitch where to start a unit of work much more effectively. 2) Using EEDI for a lesson in a computer room allows many students to receive help/guidance within the lesson, far more than an individual teacher. It often happens that within a lesson EEDI can target 100+ misconceptions. The analysis afterwards allows me to target the remaining few misconceptions in my next lesson. This is usually done as an alternative starter activity for the specific students that need it. 3) Using EEDI Tutor Plus has reduced teacher workload as most students are able to complete the intervention at home, either independently or with parent support. This has reduced the need for teachers to work during lunchtimes and after-school. This time is now targeted at students who need the support/guidance in school.
  • Slightly reduces attainment gap
I do think that there will be a positive impact on the attainment gap. We piloted the software with two sets in the spring/summer terms 2021-22. It has now been rolled out to all year groups. We are just finishing our first assessment cycle so analysis will be available shortly.
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
As above: 1) Setting a homework task that is diagnostic allows you to save time on planning "checking prior knowledge" lessons, particularly at the beginning of KS4 units. You can pitch where to start a unit of work much more effectively. 2) Using EEDI for a lesson in a computer room allows many students to receive help/guidance within the lesson, far more than an individual teacher. This is usually done as an alternative starter activity for the specific students that need it. 3) Using the White Rose Homework tasks is quick, easy and efficient at KS3
  • Significantly builds student knowledge
One of the sets that we piloted EEDI with from February 2022 made and average of 0.8 grades of progress during the year. Some of this progress is down to using EEDI as it targets students' conceptual understanding rather than procedural understanding

It has proven to be an effective way of engaging children with some of them developing healthy routines: taking a 'little and often' approach to Maths. The Ultimate Scheme of Work provides an abundance of quizzes that can be used both in lessons and for homework.

Elaine Prendiville found Eedi:

  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Misconceptions are easy to spot, making it easy to address issues; popular misconceptions can be called up on the screen with the press of a button. This allows for worthwhile thought and discussion in the classroom.
  • Significantly improves attainment
Children have reported that it has been very helpful working at their own pace and taking lessons in areas that they find difficult. It has been useful in boosting their confidence which has an impact on progress.

EEDI is regularly improving and is the only online resource that gives such detailed feedback about pupils misconceptions and misunderstandings - we love it

Natan found Eedi:
  • Moderately saves school money
At the moment the way we use it saves us time as it is a great way of quickly identifying mistakes and misconceptions in a way that teachers do not have the capacity to do - on a large scale and with instant results.
  • Significantly reduces teacher workload
EEDI can be set as homework and gives instant feedback to both the students and teachers about what we need to focus our attention on. We are also using it to assess our students at the end of specific schemes of work and the instant marking and feedback has been incredibly useful
  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
The instant feedback and ability to truly understand why students are making certain mistakes is invaluable and means our teachers know where to focus their feedback
  • Moderately improves attainment
Students that have been using EEDI regularly have been improving within lessons and are making less mistakes when they are doing similar tasks

I introduced Eedi to the whole of our secondary pathway as in its original form it allowed teachers to check the knowledge of their learners. The improved version goes much further and helps support learners to understand where they make mistakes. The learners also like the idea of the avatars and personalising their profile.

  • Moderately reduces teacher workload

  • Significantly improves teaching efficiency
Eedi allows me to see how students are progressing without having to spend lots of time on analysis as it does it for you. It also provides reasons for possible mistakes made by learners.
  • Moderately improves attainment
