What is AV1?

For children who miss out on long periods of school, due to factors beyond their control, loneliness and social isolation can be a problem with major educational and social consequences. School isn’t purely about learning and subject matter, it’s the most important social arena in a child’s life. It’s where life-long relationships are formed, and the experiences define who we become.

AV1 acts as the eyes, ears and voice of the child, in the classroom, when they can't be physically present.

AV1 is placed in the classroom whilst the child connects at home via an app on their smartphone or tablet. AV1 has a built-in camera and microphone to transmit sound and video of the lesson back to the child.

From home, the child can control their AV1 and interact with the class as if they were there. They can rotate the AV1's view, virtually raise their hand and change the expression of the AV1's eyes.

This enables the child to take part in the lesson as though they were physically present. The great thing about AV1 is that it can also be used outside the classroom. It comes with an integrated 4G sim card, meaning it can be taken out into the playground, on school trips, or even home for birthday parties!

AV1 is a secure solution with a high level of privacy. There is no recording of audio or video data

Ben Smith

Teacher of PE

Used AV1 weekly for 0–3 months

Nov 2022

It is a great device, but it hasn't been used enough (due to user illness) to make an impact worth anything higher. I can see the positives of it and its potential, but haven't yet witnessed.

Ben Smith found AV1:
  • Slightly reduces attainment gap
Difficult to say just yet. User has not attended many lessons with the AV
  • Moderately increases student collaboration
In a maths lesson, the user was able to discuss the work with a peer.
  • Not improves school processes
    Not applicable just yet
  • Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing
Again, not enough time to tell. Although it has allowed pupil to build confidence in relation to the school evironment
  • Slightly improves attainment
Too early to say. Not used AV enough

I would have liked a screen to be able to see the student's face from time to time - for that I had to use Teams.

Richard Hooper found AV1:
  • Not significantly reduces teacher workload
  • Significantly reduces attainment gap
A student who could not attend College was able to access all teaching.
  • Significantly improves school processes
The student concerned was able to keep fully in contact with all teaching.
  • Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing
Behaviour was not in doubt, but the student was able to access all teaching.
  • Significantly improves attainment
The student concerned attained a top A level grade.

Used AV1 monthly for 1-2 years

May 2022

We have now purchased 4 devices as they have really helped students unable to attend through illness and supported reintegration back in to the classroom for those struggling to go in person to the lessons through anxiety

Reply from AV1:Hi Kate! Thank you for your review. We're so pleased to hear that AV1 has supported multiple pupils at your school. Thank you for being AV1 ambassadors!
Kate found AV1:
  • Not significantly reduces teacher workload
Not having to email/contact students the lesson instructions separately if they aren't able to access the lesson in person.
  • Moderately reduces attainment gap
We have had one student unable to access school for 3 months and it allowed her to stay on top of her core lesson content to ensure she doesn't fall behind. The student has also been able to attend intervention lessons to close the gap in Maths and English that was due to previous absence.
  • Slightly improves school processes
  • Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing
It has allowed several students to feel part of their classes whilst unable to attend. To keep up to date with their friends and part of the chat during break and lunch. She told us that it really helped keep her mind of what she was potentially missing out on and still feel part of 'the action'
  • Slightly improves attainment

In a secondary school the logistics of moving it between different classes can be difficult, but otherwise it is great.

Reply from AV1:Hi Lucy! Thank you for your review. We're so pleased to hear that AV1 is having a positive impact and that it has allowed the student to keep up with her school work.
Lucy Burbridge found AV1:
  • Moderately reduces teacher workload
Without the AV1 teachers would have to prepare alternative work for the student, or find a different time to explain it to them individually.
  • Moderately reduces attainment gap
Without the AV1 the student would be falling behind significantly.
  • Slightly improves school processes
  • Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing
  • Moderately improves attainment
Yes it is definitely having an impact - it has allowed her to keep up with some of the work when she is not in lessons, and allowed us to bridge the gap when we are not able to provide an LSA to take her to lessons.
