Widgit is an amazing resource that can be used to create so many resources for all students, not just SEN or EAL. The ability to create a bank of resources which are safely stored online and accessible from anywhere with an internet connection is really helpful in a busy school.
Jacqueline Paton found Widgit:
- Moderately reduces teacher workload“Resources can be created and saved. They can then be translated to various languages quickly and easily. Previously created resources can be quickly adjusted for different languages, or changes to key vocabulary for a specific subject.”
- Slightly reduces attainment gap
- Moderately increases student collaboration“Children with little English can use the images to help them engage with other students.”
- Slightly improves teaching efficiency
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing“We used Widgit symbols to create cards for a group of students to carry with them. Other students were able to communicate using the images and this meant that non-English speakers could let us know they were unwell, upset, angry etc which led to more positive outcomes for those children than if they had been unable to let us know how they felt.”

- Moderately improves teaching efficiency“Can allow pupils to be more independent. Can reduce need for constant repetition of instructions”

Don't know how we ever managed without widgit!
Wendy found Widgit:
- Moderately reduces teacher workload“Supporting adaptation of lessons. The widgits being a permanent clue as to what to do rather than verbal instructions needing to be repeated over and over, leaving the teaching team more time to teach all pupils.”
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“Supporting our dyslexic learners to access tasks independantly and to then be able to get started, meaning that they have work that can be assessed. SEND children use widgit to access the same learning as their peers, which is helping them to close the attainment gap.”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“Widgit is used across the curriculum, so for example, in Science the pupils use widgits to sort cards into caroll and venn diagrams. In PSHE to sort cards for discussion.”
- Significantly improves teaching efficiency“Making our pupils with SEND more independent learners”
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“Widgit is used throughout our school for pastoral and behaviour support to remind the pupils of expectations as well as to let the teachers know how they are feeling. This impacts in building consistent and restorative relationships with staff and by reducing the time spent away from academic teaching. Feelings scales are in every class alongside a scale of sensations. School rules and corridor rules are displayed in widgit too, adding an inclusive aspect to the school.”

8/10 - It's a great resource and really makes vocabulary accessible. Although I understand that some elements of Widgit Online need to be under the premium memberships, I would like to see additional languages being provided as standard so that cost of the service isn't a barrier for EAL and bilingual speakers from getting the support they need. This feels at odds with Widgit's ethos.
Sam found Widgit:
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Creating resources quickly using the symbol systems that are understood by our students enables me to quickly make information accessible to students. I can be responsive to their needs as quickly as my time allows.”
- Slightly reduces attainment gap“The students I work with tend to have severe SLCN needs, so I tend to work on a person-centred basis rather than measuring to attainment and academic outcomes”
- Moderately increases student collaboration“I support students I work with to edit symbol colours, or choose symbols that best represent vocabulary for them to personalise their experience”
- Moderately improves teaching efficiency“I think once a symbol system is established, yes. I find often teachers forget the need to explain the symbol and teach its meaning (which can take longer initially). I think there is an assumption that providing the symbol is the only support needed, rather than it being used a resource to aid you to make things accessible”
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“I think its interesting to put these two ideas together. However, I do think that when a child can access vocabulary around emotions in a way they understand these two things can be impacted positively.”

I find widget really helpful and useful, i like the way you send updates and notification, I love the way it reads back. I really like the way it can be personalised for individuals and groups as well as been used across the school. However some staff who do not know it well think it is "too hard" to learn" and they can get it off twinkle.

The customer service at Widgit is incredible, which is why I took time to complete this survey. Charlie Fowler in particular has been a tremendous help - his email efficiency was amazing and he went over and above to resolve my query, more than I had perhaps anticipated. Thank you :-)
Molly found Widgit:

Our son is autistic and struggles to understand spoken communication or anything other than simple text. The Widgit InPrint software and symbols effectively unlock even complex social stories for him. The symbols and ability to add images enable him to understand the meaning, almost immediately. The InPrint 3 social stories make it possible to navigate stressful situations, such as travelling (airports security / passport control, etc) that he would otherwise be unable to tolerate. As an occasional user, it's also good to know that, if required, the technical support provided is also excellent.

It is an invaluable resource to have in school. We absolutely could not manage without it. We use Widget throughout school for all our children as an inclusive tool eg for Neurodivergent children who really value accessing the visual timetables and labels etc. If children do not need it, then they ignore it. It is there for all to use and enables access and inclusion in every aspect of school. Our school is fully labelled and will continue to be so.
Lynne Clegg found Widgit :
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Widget enables children who find reading difficult to access the curriculum and the task with more independence. The children become more self-confident and less reliant on constant adult support.”
- Does not significantly reduce attainment gap“Children who need to use Widget on a daily basis to access the learning are always significantly behind age-related peers, therefore the impact of Widget on the attainment gap is minimal, but it is there. The impact of Widget is most significant with independence and self-esteem because it enables children to work alongside peers without an adult needing to be there every minute.”
- Significantly increases student collaboration“Children can access the learning and therefore know what is happening and can discuss their learning with adults and peers eg in a science lesson the instructions and all labels were in Widget, enabling a small group of children (who would otherwise have had to work with an adult) to work alongside their peers. These children then recorded their work using Widget labels for sorting and sticking - they achieved the same learning objective (about conductors and insulators) but just through a visual medium.”
- Significantly improves teaching efficiency“Teachers have a consistent tool (with many resources) to help them plan and make appropriate tasks for children to access learning with their peers. Widget has excellent templates and a wealth of resources. It is very quick and easy to use - effective inclusion with no fuss or lengthy preparation.”
- Significantly improves behaviour or wellbeing“Children who struggle to read lengthy texts or who struggle to read even simple instructions can access Widget through the visual symbols (or photos if the teacher chooses) and this makes them much more confident, raising self-esteem. When children feel safe and included and they know what to do and what is expected of them, their behaviour automatically improves.”

Has so many capabilities, which is constantly growing. It does take you more time initially to explore, discover and get used to what it can do. We have used links on instagram of others shared ideas too
Loise found Widgit :
- Slightly reduces teacher workload“Once explored and familiar with what it can offer the impact on workload is more significant as many resources are either already prepared or made easier to make than previously. Support with differentiation and work that is accessible to all children is vastly supported using Widgit.”
- Moderately reduces attainment gap“One of our 1:1 TAs has used Widgit to create personalised learning opportunities for the child she is supporting. This is both actual lessons and/ or tools to help him access the learning. Since doing this he is accessing more of his learning than he had done previously, is communicating more readily and is showing bigger steps of progress.”
- Slightly improves teaching efficiency“It helps with differentiation and planning ahead for children who need additional visual prompts”
- Slightly improves behaviour or wellbeing“Support for regulation scales, reward charts, etc. Complements and adds to our behaviour and well being practice”
- Moderately improves attainment“Attainment is enhanced by the support Widgit provides in helping children access learning”

I often give trainings within my school to ensure many colleagues use it. It is great for ELA students, which is my job, so I want them to use it in their own lessons too.
Kerry found Widgit :
- Significantly reduces teacher workload“Quick visuals to make word lists; schedules with symbols for the lesson schedules; flashcards, bingo games etc”
- Significantly reduces attainment gap“You can make written materials accessible to students who are not yet so fluent in reading but can understand the task well when written materials are put into Widgit; students for whom English is not their first language don't need to waste time translating unknown vocabulary when they can see a little picture next to the word.”
- Significantly improves teaching efficiency“I don't have to explain all the new words to students who are new to English when there are symbols with written material. The translate tool helps easily and quickly to make dual language word lists to help pre-teach new topic vocabulary.”
- Moderately improves behaviour or wellbeing“For students who struggle with reading, frustration may lead to acting out. However, with Widgit documents, the students can more easily access the lesson materials and this helps them to stay engaged for longer. Also, visual timetables helps the students who need these to stay on-task.”
- Significantly improves attainment“I can give easy and accessible word lists or vocab charts that help the students to use a more varied vocabulary.”

I have been using Widgit Products for nearly 14 years on a daily basis. It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch their products evolve, their database of symbols to grow and, all the additional resources and tools they provide expand overtime. Customer service is absolutely fantastic. They are very responsive and very helpful as well as kind and caring. I would highly recommend their products to other people and encourage them to look through the website and attend any webinars because, there is so much you can get from their products and, they never stop adding new features and new resources which means there’s always something new and exciting to look at or try.
